Analyzing The Microbiome: A Window Into The Body's Most Complex Ecosystem

Analyzing The Microbiome: A Window Into The Body's Most Complex Ecosystem

Your gut is home to billions of microorganisms that together make up your microbiome. The microbiome plays a central role in your immune system, your digestion, and your metabolism. But what is actually going on in there? Here is what the research tells us, and how you can learn more about your own gut flora.

What Does Research Tell us About The Microbiome, and Where are We Headed?

Microbiome research is one of the fastest-growing fields in medical science. We now know that the microbiome is closely linked to conditions such as type 2 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and possibly even mental health.

But the research is still in its early stages. Much of what we see are correlations rather than causal relationships. The open question in research remains: what came first; an imbalance in the microbiome that leads to disease, or disease that disrupts the microbiome?

This is where microbiome testing plays an important role. The more data we have on how healthy and unhealthy microbiomes differ from one another, the closer we get to answers.

Want to hear more about how it all began? Listen to our podcast episode Den første forskning ("The First Research"), where Professor Oluf Borbye Pedersen from the University of Copenhagen talks about the origins of microbiome research.

What can a Microbiome Analysis Map Out?

A microbiome analysis gives you a detailed picture of life in your gut. Specifically, it can identify:

  • Bacterial diversity - how many different bacterial species are present and in what quantities. A diverse microbiome is generally a sign of good gut health.
  • Specific bacterial strains - the presence of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, as well as less beneficial species.
  • Balance - whether certain bacterial groups are dominating at the expense of others, which can be linked to bloating, fatigue, or poor digestion.

It is important to set realistic expectations: a microbiome analysis cannot diagnose disease. It is a mapping tool — not a medical examination. But it can provide valuable insight that helps guide your everyday choices.

How is The Microbiome Analyzed?

A microbiome analysis starts with a stool sample. It may sound a little off-putting, but the process is simple and hygienic.

From the sample, DNA is extracted from all the microorganisms living in the gut. That DNA is then read using a technology called DNA sequencing, which makes it possible to identify exactly which bacteria are present - and in what quantities.

At Unseen Bio, we work with the most advanced sequencing methods, allowing us not only to detect over 4,500 different bacteria, but also to examine what they are actually doing.

The results are then processed using bioinformatics tools that translate raw genetic data from the microbes into a clear, readable digital report about your gut flora.

Valuable Knowledge - for You and for The Industry

For you as a consumer, a microbiome analysis can be the starting point for concrete changes in diet and lifestyle - not based on generic advice, but on a well-grounded picture of your specific microbiome.

But microbiome research and analysis reach far beyond the individual consumer. The more industry understands the microbiome, the closer we get to health solutions tailored to the individual rather than one-size-fits-all medicine and treatment.

That is why several industries are actively working with microbiome data:

  • The pharmaceutical industry - developing microbiome-based treatments and biological medicines
  • The food sector - mapping how ingredients and products affect the gut flora, and developing the next generation of pre- and probiotics
  • Personalized medicine and treatment support - tailored treatments based on your personal gut microbiome, and lifestyle interventions to support treatment
  • The agricultural sector - optimizing gut health in animals to reduce antibiotic use, and examining the influence of soil and plant microbiomes on growth and resilience
  • Epidemic research - testing for, for example, antibiotic resistance through wastewater analysis - listen to our podcast episode Antibiotikaresistens (Antibiotic resistance) with researcher and associated professor from DTU Patrick Munk, that explains about this method

You can also hear more about how the industry works with the microbiome in our podcast episode Kosttilskud og industrien ("Supplements and the Industry"), with Adam Baker, Director of Science for Future Labs at Novonesis.

Would You Like to Learn More About Your Personal Microbiome?

Microbiome analysis is for anyone who wants to understand their body at a deeper level. Knowing the composition of your microbiome gives you a unique starting point for making choices about diet, lifestyle, and supplements that actually suit you.

If you are curious about your gut health, you can easily gain insight with a microbiome test from Unseen Bio.

You can also listen to the podcast Mikrobiomet ("The Microbiome"), where we dig deeper into the topic with a range of experts who discuss the many aspects the microbiome influences - or browse our many articles on diet and general gut health.
